FOMO: Everyone feels regret from time to time. That’s normal. However, when people feel regret too often or feel the need to be at any event, just not to miss anything, it takes over their life.

Some people even tag it as social anxiety. You constantly compare yourself to others and it can lead to obsessively checking in social media, looking at pictures of happy people doing amazing things and having fun.

Well, you see – You’re grumpy, scrolling through your feed, paying too much attention to what other people do, and how awesome the lights are comparing to yours. This will eventually lead to insecurity, which leads to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and more insecurity. That’s how they continue to feed each other and hurt you.

Way FOMO  (Fear of Missing Out) Lets You Think

Maybe you think, “If I was in New York right now or hanging out with all of the celebrities in LA, I would have a much better and glamorous life.” Or maybe even simple things like, “If I go out with all the cool guys that go to parties all the time, my life would be fun.”

By thinking this way, you ignore two important things.

One: You Don’t Know How Others Feel

You don’t really know how these people feel, if that event was really that fun or it just looks amazing in the pictures because everyone is smiling. 

Two: You Don’t Know If You Would Have Also Enjoyed It

You don’t know if you would have enjoyed going to the places you see on social media. The event might be awesome, but it doesn’t mean that you would have felt good being there . Even if you would, there is nothing wrong with doing something else. At the same time, you can’t be everywhere.

Don’t Jump to Conclusions

When you understand how stupid it is to think that we know something just because we read, see, or hear about it, you don’t jump to conclusions. You decrease the obsessive thinking about other people’s lives. You just don’t care as much anymore.

Let’s say that there is a famous rock band coming to perform in your town. At the same time, you have a meeting at work, so you can’t attend the concert. You ask some of your friends how the show was. Michael says, “It was the best show ever, the band members were amazing and it was unforgettable.” Your other friend Josh says, “It was too hot and too crowded, we couldn’t see anything. People pushed one another and I didn’t enjoy it all.”

So, the same event, same time, two different people, two different versions. You don’t know what version you would have told.

Maybe you would have had a great time, but you missed it. It is not the end of the world. It’s okay to be upset that your boss didn’t let you go.

If you experienced the fear of missing out too often, you’re probably not satisfied, not happy with your life. So, first of all, it’s a good wake-up quality notice and you can use it to improve your life.

You need to understand that being in all of those places or taking part in certain events will not make you happier or solve the problem. You have to work on yourself.

First, try to understand where this feeling comes from. What causes you to feel like you don’t want to miss something? Maybe, you’re not confident in yourself. You’re not doing what you love or you don’t appreciate enough of what you have.

So, understanding where the problem comes from being aware of it. This would be a great start.

Work on Your Happiness

Now you know what to work on and the how is up to you. What I would recommend doing is understand where your FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) comes from. Keep in mind that nothing is like it seems. Work on yourself, develop, and improve. Be responsible for your own happiness. Don’t get upset if you do miss something.

When you take the time to appreciate all the things you have in your life, you understand what you don’t really need more than you have. You already have all you need. What you do need is to change your mindset and focus on your happiness instead on others.
