To begin and succeed at focusing and relaxing your mind, it is important to understand that your mind is not your brain. Your brain is a physical apparatus that tunes in and expresses your mind. For instance, your brain can identify a joke, but it’s your mind that has a sense of humor and makes you laugh.

Your brain can identify opportunities, but it is your mind that always chooses them. Like a computer, your brain doesn’t have the power of choice, but your mind does. Your brain is similar to a television set. It is a receiver of the airwaves that carry information, such as thoughts. Your mind produces the airwave informations and thoughts into your conscious awareness.

It is your brain’s function to receive, interpret those messages, and express them. So, that leaves us with the question, “What is your mind?”

Your mind is pure consciousness. It is ageless, non tangible, and it is energy that includes your beliefs, attitudes, thoughts and feelings, which make up emotion, your imagination, creativity, your memories, hopes, dreams, and myths.

Your imagination is the star pupil. Your imagination is incredibly powerful. It forms the basis of your body-mind connection. What you hold and see in your mind affects your body function, the chemistry and even your autonomic nervous system.

Here’s what I mean. Close your eyes for just a moment and I want you to think about a lemon. Imagine that there’s a large lemon with a waxy yellow pitted skin, see it as a shiny and beautiful lemon.

Now in your mind, imagine that you have a knife in your other hand and you’re going to slowly cut the lemon in half. As the blade breaks the skin, a sprits of lemon juice squirts out and begins to run down the blade of the knife.

You can smell the lemon juice in your mind. Now imagine you are taking half of that lemon and squeezing the juice into your mouth. Taste the sour lemon swirling over your tongue and swallow the juice.

When your imagination of the lemon is created in your mind, your body responds. With a strong body mind connection, it can cause your mouth to water.

Your mind stores the memory of lemon juice in your past experiences. Simply by imagining the lemon, you altered the moisture in your mouth. The saliva glands are regulated by the autonomic nervous system. This system controls your heart rate, blood pressure, immune function, digestive respiratory and circulatory systems, and you just affected it with an image in your mind.

That is the power of the body-mind connection and the secret to most hypnosis.

The first technique is a breathing technique. Whenever you feel like you need to relax and focus, simply slow down your mind  and begin by inhaling a deep breath through your nose. As you exhale, exhale slowly through your mouth and mentally repeat the word relax in your mind. Taking a second long slow deep breath, as you exhale mentally, repeat the word relax in your mind. Do this technique three or four times whenever you’re stressed or feel scattered. It can help you to relax and focus your mind very quickly.

Journaling Technique:

The second technique is to journal. Journaling slows down your thinking and will help you to relax. This exercise will help you gain clarity and perspective in your life. Find some paper and write down your thoughts. This will help you slow down your thinking and release what quote is on your mind.

As you write, remind yourself,  “I have these thoughts. I am NOT my thoughts. I have these feelings, but I’m not my feelings.” Let the words flow out of you and write them down without editing or being concerned about grammar or spelling, and to clear your consciousness. Express and write what’s on your mind.

Then, take the papers and destroy them. You can tear them up and throw them away. An important tip  and a very important fact is that, you cannot write as fast as you think. So, when you write down your thoughts, you slow down your thinking automatically and as you slow down your thinking, you begin to relax.

This is one of the benefits of journaling and why it is considered a meditative experience. It slows your mind down and focuses your attention quickly.

The third technique is a very simple and powerful technique. It is the power to hum. In other words, if you are feeling scattered and need to relax, begin to hum the lyrics of your favorite song. Concentrate on remembering the lyrics and feel the vibration of humming in your throat, face, and chest.

When you hum  consciously a favorite song, you will begin to concentrate by simply trying to remember the song.

It will help to focus your mind and the vibration of humming will ground you into the sensation of your physical body. This is a great technique that you can do anywhere and at any time. After just a few minutes, you will feel more relaxed and focused.

Being sensual simply means to be aware of your five senses. In other words, smell the air. Is there any fragrance in the air you smell? Feel temperature on your skin, listen to the sounds around you, and taste the food that you eat. Be more in the present moment, it will help you to relax.

Being sensual brings you not only into the present moment fast and effectively, but it helps to heighten your awareness.

Finally, the fifth and final technique is meditation itself. Learning to meditate is a wonderful way to help you to relax at will. For whenever you learn to meditate and practice regularly, at other times when you’re busy, getting ready for a meeting, you will find that simply taking a deep breath in and remembering a time when you are meditating, will help you to get relaxed immediately.
