What Is Bipolar Disorder?

Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness. Just like other medical condition like heart disease, more than five million Americans in the United States have bipolar disorder. Furthermore, it consists of mood swings which involve major highs and major lows.

There are two types of bipolar disorder.

Type I is where a patient experiences a manic episode. The other type is called bipolar Type II where a patient experiences hypomanic episodes and depression. Bipolar disorder is also called manic depressive disorder, which was the old terminology that  we are not using anymore. We are using bipolar disorder nowadays.

We don’t know the exact cause of bipolar disorder, but there are quite a few factors which causes  bipolar disorder. Genetic predisposition runs in the family, abnormalities of the brain, chemical imbalance in the brain, stress, abuse, and psychological trauma. All of these factors contribute to either cause or put anyone at risk of bipolar disorder.

What are the symptoms of Bipolar Disorder?

In bipolar disorder, a patient goes through major highs and major lows. Furthermore, when a patient experiences major highs, their mood is either irritable, agitated, or elated/euphoric. Moreover, they are easily distracted as well as they don’t sleep, but have a lot of energy and unable to focus. They exhibit grandiose behavior,  in which they feel like they’re on the top of the world. They engage in risky behavior, like engaging in promiscuous sexual activity.

They are involved in gambling and shopping sprees. Moreover, they buy stuff that they don’t need. They are involved in impulsive behavior, like using more drugs and alcohol. Their mind races a thousand miles per hour. Moreover, they are unable to focus and are easily distracted. These are some of the signs of bipolar I disorder when a patient goes through a manic episode.

When a patient goes through major lows, their mood is  depressed, hopeless, and unable to concentrate. Energy level is down. Guilt is increased. They are unable to sleep or sometimes they sleep a lot. Their appetite goes down, as well as they lose weight. Sometimes a patient develops increased appetite and they gain weight. They can have suicidal thoughts and take action on their plan.

Are There Complications if Bipolar Disorder is Left Untreated?

If they don’t get treatment on time, they are more likely to use alcohol and drugs. They are more likely to get into legal problems, as well as  have difficulty coping at work. They end up losing their job. Moreover ,their grades plummet and they fail their classes. We have so many patients who have bipolar disorder. They either end up getting divorced, separated, or go through several break-ups. So, it affects relationships and if they continue to experience bipolar symptoms without treatment, they are at highest risk of either hurting themselves or others. Suicide is one of the complications of untreated bipolar disorder.

The good news is bipolar disorder is a treatable condition. Just like diabetes and heart disease, there are safe medications and psychotherapy.
